After the initial online introduction of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles concept California XXL – based on the Crafter – the company decided to remind us there are still some vacation days left.
The prototype has debuted at the Caravan Salon Düsseldorf, certainly taking visitors on a dream tour with the model – since some of its creature comforts are just like having a nice Airbnb on the move. We saw the interesting exterior, but since we’re dealing with a camper we need to dive inside – the cabin is spacious and airy, and best of all includes just about everything from living to dining area to a wet room with a shower, sink, and toilet. The prototype started life as a medium-wheelbase Crafter with taller roof and there’s also a galley with sink, gas hob, and a couple of fridges. Families are welcome – there are alcoves for two children as well as a sleeping area at the back.
That one will literally make you stargaze – the rear window extends into the sleeping area and there’s also a huge panoramic roof. After the night has ended, the bed can be stowed away in a special compartment. The camper also grants you access to 220V sockets and AUX, USB ports, a built-in digital projector and ambient lighting – even a big grill can be hosted in the storage space behind the tailgate for the mandatory barbecuing. The tailgate also hots two camping chairs, a removable table – and when it’s not comfy for sitting outside auxiliary and underfloor heating will be ready to heat up the atmosphere.
