The 2015 North American Car of the Year award goes towards the German designed Volkswagen Golf & Golf GTI and, naturally, the recently launched new generation of the iconic F-150 pickup has won the truck segment.
Both winners were unveiled during the press days of the 2015 edition of the North American International Auto Show taking place these days in Detroit and the Golf/Golf GTI pair won the passenger car category with 256 points. Second place was awarded to the equally new generation of the original pony car – Ford’s Mustang – with 204 points (we’re not biased, but in our opinion this is the true winner), followed at a huge distance by the Hyundai Genesis with 110 points. “Volkswagen is thrilled to start 2015 with the Golf and Golf GTI taking home the incredible North American Car of the Year title,” said Michael Horn, CEO, Volkswagen Group of America. In the US, the Golf family consists of the sporty Golf GTI, the Golf 1.8T, the Golf TDI Clean Diesel and the fully electric e-Golf.
Without any surprise, the aluminum intensive new generation 2015 F-150 took home the prize for the truck/utility section, scoring an even more impressive level of 297 points – miles away from second-placed Chevrolet Colorado that only boasted 205 points. Ford’s premium division Lincoln had reasons to celebrate, taking the final podium place for the MKC, which scored a total of 68 points. “Ford employees and customers have a lot to be proud of with the innovative and award-winning F-150,” commented Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of The Americas.
