VW America has named Joerg Sommer the company’s new head of product strategy, as the automaker will soon launch its plug-in vehicle in the US.
Sommer’s new job is effective September 1st and he will serve as vice president of product marketing and strategy. Sommer, 47, will replace Rainer Michel, who will take an as-yet-unannounced engineering job at VW in Germany. Sommer previously served as head of electric mobility sales and marketing for VW Group.
Other companies included in Sommer’s work experience are Renault, Chrysler and GM’s Opel. In his new position he will be responsible for the new strategy related to pricing for the VW vehicles in the US, EVs, connectivity and powertrains.
“Joerg brings extensive experience, technical background, and enthusiasm for the brand as we prepare for the next phase of growth,” Jonathan Browning, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, said in the statement.
Sommer has extensive experience in the EV segment which will be useful for the automaker’s launch of the EV e-Golf, which will hit the US market in 2014. The model will be followed in the next years by a plug-in hybrid version of the Golf.
