In September, the most important locally made models, the seventh-generation Golf, rolled off the product line in Foshan. Within just three years, Volkswagen plans a wave of locally made models, jumping from the current 21 China-made models to 30 by 2015.
VW CEO Martin Winterkorn previously said during Volkswagen’s annual report press conference, the company he leads plans to to build seven new plants in China and augument the total production capacity in China to 4 million cars by 2018.
“Volkswagen plans to further expand its product line in China by 2015, sales models will increase to 91, including 30 China-made models, the number of which will increase by almost 50%.”, says Volkswagen China President and CEO Heizmann.
The Volkswagen China expansion map plans for Faw-VW to have manufacturing facilities from the northeast to Guangdong, the southern most province; while Shanghai Volkswagen directly set up a plant in the far West Urumqi, Xinjiang.
When setting up the factory in Foshan, Guangdong Province, Heiziman said: “Volkswagen is fast advancing the “Southern Strategy” and “Western Strategy”. “Western strategy” is to open a factory in Urumqi, Xinjiangi, which was put into operation more than a month ago. We here today will continue to promote the “Southern strategy”, and put the factory production into operation in Foshan ”
Introducing more China-made cars is an important threshold for VW to further gain market share. Besides the new generation Golf hatchback, SUV models will be the next growth target in China.
