2013 Dodge Dart Unveiled Ahead of Detroit Motor Show Debut
Dodge has revealed the 2013 Dart, its first Fiat-Chrysler joint development, previewing the new saloon before its official Detroit show debut.
Dodge has released the first official images and details of the 2013 Dart ahead of its debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. The Dart is the first product developed from the ground up by Fiat and Chrysler engineers since the merger, and it replaces the Caliber in Dodge’s line-up. Built on a widened and lengthened version of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta platform, the Dart enters the compact saloon segment to take on rivals like the Ford Focus and Chevrolet Cruze. The underpinnings retain the Giulietta’s MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link independent rear, but the car has been adapted for US preferences and regulations.

Engine Options and Transmissions
Three four-cylinder engines will be available from launch: a 2.0-litre 16-valve “Tigershark”, a 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo (shared with the Fiat 500 Abarth), and a 2.4-litre Tigershark MultiAir. Buyers will have a choice of three transmissions, including a six-speed manual and two automatics. Dodge has indicated a nine-speed automatic may be added later.

Design and Features
Styling cues include the Charger-inspired “racetrack” LED tail lamps and a laser-brazed roof joint, a technique borrowed from the Giulietta to improve body rigidity and eliminate the need for roof mouldings. The Dart’s proportions and detailing reflect its European roots, but the car has been sized for American buyers. The 2013 Dodge Dart is the first all-new Dodge saloon since the Caliber, and the first to use an Alfa Romeo-derived platform.
