Subaru WRX STI rallycross car revealed at New York show
Subaru has unveiled its new WRX STI rallycross car, the VT15x, at the 2015 New York Auto Show, confirming plans to contest Red Bull Global Rallycross and X Games events.
Subaru took the wraps off its latest rallycross contender, the WRX STI VT15x, at the 2015 New York Auto Show. Built by Vermont SportsCar for Subaru Rally Team USA, the car is set to compete in the Red Bull Global Rallycross and X Games Rallycross series in 2015.
The VT15x is based on the 2015 WRX STI but has been extensively modified for rallycross competition. The most obvious changes are the wide body kit and aggressive aerodynamic additions, which are designed to cope with the demands of mixed-surface, high-contact racing. The car sits on METHOD race wheels and features revised suspension geometry to handle the jumps and rough landings typical of rallycross circuits.
Technical highlights
Under the bonnet sits a 2.0-litre turbocharged Boxer engine, producing 580hp, according to Subaru. Power is sent to all four wheels via a six-speed SADEV sequential gearbox. The manufacturer claims the VT15x can accelerate from 0 to 60mph in just two seconds, a figure that puts it among the quickest cars in the rallycross field.
Weight distribution and aerodynamics have been optimised for the unique demands of rallycross. Subaru has not released full technical details, but the focus is clearly on rapid acceleration, durability and handling on loose surfaces. The car's livery reflects Subaru's traditional blue and yellow rally colours, linking it visually to the brand's rallying heritage.
Competition plans
The WRX STI VT15x is scheduled to make its competitive debut in the 2015 Red Bull Global Rallycross season, as well as the X Games Rallycross event. Subaru Rally Team USA will field the car against rivals from Ford, Volkswagen and others in a championship known for its short, action-packed races and high-profile venues.
