Audi celebrates five millionth A4 at Ingolstadt plant
Audi has built its five millionth A4, a 2.0 TFSI quattro in Misano Red, marking a milestone for the model since its 1994 debut.
Audi has marked the production of its five millionth A4, rolling the milestone car off the line at its main Ingolstadt plant. The car in question is a 2.0 TFSI quattro saloon finished in Misano Red, representing the latest generation of Audi’s best-selling compact executive model.
Production of the A4 began in 1994, replacing the Audi 80 and introducing the new model name that would become a mainstay for the brand. Over nearly two decades, the A4 has become Audi’s most popular model worldwide, with manufacturing centred in Germany and additional output from facilities in China and India for local markets.
A4’s evolution and market position
The current B8 generation, which debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, brought a larger platform and more interior space, especially in rear legroom and boot capacity. Audi positioned the A4 to offer comfort and technology features typically found in larger cars, aiming to compete directly with the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class in the compact executive segment.
The A4’s engine range has evolved from naturally aspirated units to turbocharged four-cylinder and V6 options. The five millionth car features the 2.0-litre TFSI engine with quattro all-wheel drive, a powertrain that has been central to the model’s appeal. While the four-cylinder is known for efficiency and torque, some reviewers have noted it lacks the refinement of six-cylinder rivals. The S4 variant, with its 3.0 TFSI V6, has been praised for its balance of performance and economy.
Safety and recognition
The A4 has consistently scored well in safety testing, earning a Top Safety Pick rating from the US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Standard equipment includes antilock brakes, multiple airbags and electronic stability control, with additional options for rear-seat side airbags.
