Ford EcoSport SUV confirmed for European launch within a year
Ford will introduce its Fiesta-based EcoSport SUV to the European market within 12 months, but has yet to confirm the production site.
Ford has confirmed it will launch the EcoSport small SUV in Europe within the next 12 months, expanding its line-up in a segment that has seen rapid growth across the region. The EcoSport, based on the Fiesta platform, is already on sale in Latin America and Asia, but this marks the model’s first entry into European showrooms.
Ford’s European communications chief, John Gardiner, confirmed the timeframe but declined to name the plant that will supply the EcoSport to Europe. At present, the vehicle is produced in Brazil for Latin America and in India for Asian-Pacific markets. Ford has not indicated whether European models will be sourced from either of these locations or built at an existing European facility.
Production plans remain unconfirmed
Speculation has centred on Ford’s Craiova plant in Romania, which already builds the B-MAX MPV and 1.0-litre EcoBoost engines. Gardiner said Ford plans to manufacture a second vehicle in Craiova in the future, but did not confirm if this would be the EcoSport. The plant is also set to begin production of a 1.5-litre petrol engine in early 2013, broadening its output beyond the B-MAX.
The B-MAX, like the EcoSport, is built on the Fiesta platform, making Craiova a logical candidate for future EcoSport production. However, Ford has yet to make a public commitment. The company’s European production strategy has been under review as it seeks to balance capacity and local demand.
EcoSport’s position in Ford’s European range
The arrival of the EcoSport will give Ford a direct rival to compact SUVs such as the Renault Captur and Nissan Juke, as well as the Dacia Duster, which recently reached a 400,000-unit production milestone at its own Romanian plant. The EcoSport’s Fiesta underpinnings are expected to help keep costs down and appeal to buyers looking for a compact, urban-friendly SUV with higher ground clearance than a standard hatchback.
