Corriere dello Sport, Autosprint and La Gazzetta dello Sport all reported the sighting, with Ferrari-focused journalist Leo Turrini also confirming Hamilton’s presence in Maranello. The visit took place during a break in the Formula One calendar, at a time when both Ferrari and Mercedes were evaluating their driver line-ups for future seasons.
La Gazzetta dello Sport stated that Hamilton’s visit was not related to Ferrari’s Formula One team. Instead, the paper suggested the British driver was in town to add to his personal collection of Ferraris, with the ultra-rare LaFerrari hypercar mentioned as a likely acquisition. Hamilton is known for his interest in high-performance road cars, and has previously owned several supercars outside his Mercedes commitments.
Rumours swirl despite denials
Despite the suggestion that the visit was purely personal, some Italian commentators have interpreted Hamilton’s appearance as a calculated move. Autosprint’s Roberto Chinchero described it as a possible signal to Mercedes management, particularly Niki Lauda and Toto Wolff, that Hamilton’s options in the driver market remain open. With both Hamilton and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen under contract for 2015, speculation about future moves continues to circulate.
Ferrari declined to comment on Hamilton’s presence at the factory. The team was in the midst of a challenging 2014 season, having brought Kimi Raikkonen back alongside Fernando Alonso.
