Hamilton-to-Ferrari speculation intensifies during Bahrain Grand Prix weekend
Negotiations over Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes contract spark fresh rumours in Bahrain, with Ferrari’s 2016 driver line-up under scrutiny and both teams addressing the speculation.
Contract talks between Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes have stalled into April 2015, fuelling speculation in the Bahrain paddock that the reigning world champion may be exploring a move to Ferrari for the 2016 Formula One season.
Hamilton’s future became a focal point during the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend as multiple sources in the paddock suggested the Briton or his representatives had made contact with Ferrari. The Scuderia’s own driver line-up remains unsettled, with Kimi Raikkonen’s contract up for renewal and no guarantee of extension. Team principal Maurizio Arrivabene told reporters that Raikkonen’s future depends strictly on his performance, confirming that talks do not yet amount to a new deal.
Mercedes and Ferrari address the rumours
Mercedes chairman Niki Lauda dismissed the notion of Hamilton joining Ferrari, describing the speculation as “pointless” and reaffirming the team’s intention to keep its current line-up of Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Team boss Toto Wolff acknowledged that it is normal for both a top driver and a leading team to keep their options open during contract negotiations, but insisted that discussions with Hamilton had reached the stage of finalising details rather than considering alternatives.
On the Ferrari side, Arrivabene’s comments left the door open for changes in the 2016 line-up, but there was no confirmation of any offer to Hamilton. Reports in the German press claimed that after suggestions Hamilton had approached Ferrari, Mercedes chairman Dieter Zetsche sought and received direct assurance from Ferrari’s Sergio Marchionne that no such move was in progress. Wolff also stated there was no offer from Ferrari for Hamilton and maintained that the British driver would remain at Mercedes.
Raikkonen’s position and team dynamics
Kimi Raikkonen’s future with Ferrari remains uncertain. His manager, Steve Robertson, said in Bahrain that there is a “good chance” the Finn will be retained, highlighting positive relations within the team and Raikkonen’s satisfaction with the car. However, Robertson also noted that ongoing discussions have yet to result in a signed agreement.
