Sainz Unfazed by Verstappen Attention Amid Toro Rosso Rookie Battle

Carlos Sainz has played down the importance of matching the intense media attention surrounding his Toro Rosso teammate Max Verstappen, stating that his focus remains on impressing the team and continuing his development in Formula One. The 20-year-old Spaniard has quietly delivered strong performances in his rookie season, despite Verstappen’s high profile and the scrutiny following the Dutch driver’s Monaco Grand Prix crash.

Sainz currently leads Verstappen in the points standings, with nine points to Verstappen’s six after the opening rounds of the 2015 season. The qualifying head-to-head is also even, with each driver outqualifying the other three times. While Verstappen’s youth and aggressive style have made headlines, Sainz’s consistent results have gone largely under the radar outside the paddock.

Speaking to Speed Week, Sainz acknowledged that Verstappen’s profile means his own efforts are often overlooked by the media. He said this does not concern him, as his main objective is to demonstrate his ability to the decision-makers at Red Bull and Toro Rosso, rather than chase public recognition. Sainz described the start to his Formula One career as better than expected and reiterated that his focus is on learning and performing well on track.
