Mercedes-Benz unveils 2014 S-Class with advanced tech and new engines
Mercedes-Benz presented the 2014 S-Class in Hamburg, introducing new safety systems, all-LED lighting, and a choice of efficient engines, with European sales starting July 2013.
Mercedes-Benz revealed the 2014 S-Class on 15 May 2013 at the Airbus A380 delivery centre in Hamburg, marking the introduction of the sixth generation of its flagship saloon. The new S-Class arrives with a suite of advanced driver assistance systems, upgraded interior technology, and a revised engine line-up, with European sales set to begin in July 2013.
The new S-Class is available in both standard and long-wheelbase forms, with overall lengths of 5,116mm and 5,248mm respectively. Both variants are longer than their predecessors, while interior space increases slightly for all occupants. The wheelbase remains unchanged at 3,165mm. Mercedes-Benz will offer four body styles for the first time: standard saloon, long-wheelbase saloon, coupe (replacing the outgoing CL-Class), and cabriolet. In key export markets such as the US and China, only the long-wheelbase version will be sold.
Engine range and performance
At launch, the S-Class engine line-up includes diesel, petrol and hybrid options, all paired with the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission. The S350 BlueTEC uses a 3.0-litre V6 diesel with 258hp and 620Nm, returning 5.6l/100km and a 0-100km/h time of 6.8 seconds. The S500 features a 4.7-litre V8 petrol engine producing 455hp and 700Nm, with a claimed 0-100km/h time of 4.8 seconds. The S400 Hybrid combines a 3.5-litre V6 petrol with a 20kW electric motor for a total of 306hp, while the S300 BlueTEC Hybrid pairs a 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel with a 15kW electric motor, delivering 204hp and an official combined consumption of 4.4l/100km.

An AMG version is expected to join the range, and Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the S-Class will ultimately be available in four body styles, including coupe and cabriolet variants. For more on the S-Class Coupe, see Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Concept Shown Live at Frankfurt.
Technology and safety features
The 2014 S-Class introduces several new technologies, including Road Surface Scan, which uses cameras to detect imperfections ahead and adjust the suspension accordingly. The car is fitted with a 360-degree camera and radar system, supporting advanced driver assistance features such as enhanced Brake Assist, which can now detect cross traffic and pedestrians. Collision Prevention Assist, Magic Vision Control, and a suite of new safety systems are standard.
Inside, the S-Class features two 12.3-inch high-resolution displays, a Burmester audio system, and LED ambient lighting with customisable colours and zones. Buyers can choose from five seating layouts, including a rear seat that reclines to 43.5 degrees and offers calf support. The air conditioning system can diffuse a choice of fragrances throughout the cabin. The “First Class Rear” package adds a business centre console with extra storage, a folding table and integrated telephone.
Pricing and availability
European sales begin in July 2013, with German pricing starting at €79,790 for the S350 BlueTEC. The S400 Hybrid is priced from €85,204, and the S500 from €104,601. Long-wheelbase versions carry a premium. The S-Class will not be available in short-wheelbase form in the US or China. The new model replaces the outgoing S-Class and, indirectly, the discontinued Maybach.
