Renault backs Palmer amid speculation over F1 seat
Team principal Frédéric Vasseur says Renault remains committed to Jolyon Palmer despite rumours linking Esteban Ocon and Sergey Sirotkin to the seat.
Renault has publicly backed Jolyon Palmer, insisting the British rookie retains the team's support despite swirling speculation about his Formula One seat. Team principal Frédéric Vasseur confirmed the manufacturer is “happy” with Palmer’s progress, even as Esteban Ocon prepares to run in Palmer’s car during Friday practice at the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix.
The timing of the speculation is pointed, coming in the same week as Red Bull’s high-profile demotion of Daniil Kvyat. Palmer, the 2014 GP2 champion, has faced scrutiny after a mixed start to his rookie campaign. Reports have suggested that Renault could replace him with a young charger such as Ocon, the reigning GP3 champion, or Sergey Sirotkin, who has also been linked with a future drive.
Ocon, a Mercedes junior and last year’s GP3 title winner, is scheduled to take over Palmer’s car for the first free practice session in Barcelona. While some have read this as a sign Palmer’s seat is under threat, Renault insists the decision is part of its development programme. Vasseur, who previously managed Ocon in GP3, said the team is satisfied with both its drivers and is not planning any changes. “We have a strong lineup and one we’re happy with and committed to,” he said in the team’s public statements.

Palmer has yet to score a point in the opening rounds of the 2016 season, while team-mate Kevin Magnussen has delivered the team’s only points so far. Vasseur acknowledged Palmer’s early struggles but described them as natural for a rookie, emphasising the driver’s methodical approach and progress. The team’s public comments are intended to quell speculation and provide stability as Renault continues its rebuilding phase after returning as a full works outfit.
Ocon’s practice run is not unusual for a factory team evaluating its junior talent. Both Ocon and Sirotkin remain on Renault’s radar for the future, but for now, the team has made clear that Palmer’s position is not under immediate threat.
