Hyundai Approves Tucson N and Kona N Performance SUVs
Hyundai has given the green light to high-performance N versions of its Tucson and Kona SUVs, with both models set to receive upgraded powertrains and chassis.
Hyundai has approved N performance variants of the Tucson and Kona, expanding its N division beyond the i30 and Veloster. The move brings the N badge to two of the brand’s most important SUVs, confirming that both models will receive the full suite of performance upgrades.
The decision was confirmed by N division chief Albert Biermann, who acknowledged that management has signed off on both projects. While a performance Tucson had been widely expected, the Kona N’s approval marks the first time Hyundai’s smaller SUV will join the N line-up. Both models are set for significant changes, including more powerful engines, larger brakes, stiffer suspension and bespoke bodywork designed to set them apart from standard versions.
Performance upgrades planned for Tucson and Kona
Hyundai’s N division will apply its usual formula to the SUVs: more power, uprated brakes, a sportier suspension set-up and aerodynamic enhancements. Details on exact engine specifications have not been released, but the treatment is expected to mirror that of the i30 N, which uses a turbocharged four-cylinder delivering up to 275hp in its most potent form.

The N division’s approach is to create halo models that boost the brand’s image without undermining Hyundai’s reputation for value and quality. Senior product planning manager Andrew Tuitahi has said the company will proceed cautiously, ensuring every N model meets high standards before launch. As a result, neither the Tucson N nor Kona N is considered an immediate priority, and launch timing remains unclear.

The addition of the Tucson and Kona N models will broaden Hyundai’s performance line-up, which until now has focused on hot hatches. The move signals Hyundai’s intent to compete with established performance SUV offerings from rival manufacturers. For buyers, the arrival of N-badged SUVs promises a new level of driving engagement in a segment typically dominated by practicality.
