Study: young people in Germany desire their own car

Most young people in Germany want to have their own car, according to a study carried out by TNS Infratest, a renowned institute for market and opinion research in Germany.

In the study, 1,000 men and women aged 18 or over were asked about their attitudes to cars. For 80 % of 18 to 29-year-olds, owning their first car is “something really special.” Two out of three respondents in this age group said that it was important to them to have a car of their own. The percentage was even higher among respondents in their mid-30s.

Matthias Wissmann, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), commented on the results of the study by saying, “Some ‘experts’ want to make out that today’s young people are becoming less interested in the world of automobiles. But the opposite is the case: young people obviously still attach great importance to individual mobility, even in urban areas. Cars and smartphones ceased to be mutually exclusive a long time ago; instead they complement each other.”

This is also the result of the study entitled “Unser Auto von morgen – 2013/14” (“Our car of tomorrow – 2013/2014”) by AutoScout24, a European online car trading portal, involving around 8,800 people from seven European countries. It showed that young people attach special importance to using cars as communication platforms and also to being contactable and able to use the Internet while traveling.

Most of the 18 to 29-year-olds said that having a car of their own was important. However, the vehicles should be adapted to their individual needs. The study also found that connectivity, efficiency and safe driving are key features. And one in two respondents still sees an automobile as a status symbol.
