Tost backs Verstappen as future F1 world champion
Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost says Max Verstappen’s maturity and skill could make him a Formula One world champion if given the right team and environment.
Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost believes Max Verstappen has the talent and maturity to become a Formula One world champion, provided he finds the right team and environment. Speaking after the 17-year-old’s eye-catching start to the 2015 season, Tost said Verstappen’s performances have already exceeded expectations for a driver of his age.
Tost told German broadcaster Sky that Verstappen’s age is less important than his approach and skill. “If he continues like this and has the right team and the right environment, then he can definitely win the world championship,” Tost said. He described Verstappen as “much more mature” than his years suggest, adding that young drivers now arrive in Formula One with higher levels of preparation and racecraft than in previous eras.
Verstappen’s debut season has already included several daring overtakes and consistent points finishes, drawing praise from commentators and former drivers. Martin Brundle, commentating in Shanghai, said Verstappen showed signs of the same potential that marked out Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher as future greats. Verstappen has quickly moved beyond the achievements of his father, Jos Verstappen, who raced in Formula One during the 1990s and early 2000s.
FIA changes super licence rules after Verstappen’s debut
Verstappen’s rapid rise has already had regulatory consequences. Following his signing by Toro Rosso, the FIA introduced a minimum age of 18 for new Formula One drivers. The move was widely seen as a response to concerns about the readiness of very young drivers for the demands of the sport. Tost argued that today’s young drivers are better prepared than ever, thanks to extensive karting, junior single-seater experience and professional training from an early age.
The debate over youth and readiness in Formula One has intensified since Verstappen’s arrival. While some in the paddock questioned whether a 17-year-old should compete at the highest level, Verstappen’s results and confidence have shifted many opinions. Tost’s support comes as Verstappen cements his reputation as one of the most promising new talents on the grid.

Brundle’s comparison to Senna and Schumacher reflects the growing belief that Verstappen could follow in the footsteps of Formula One’s elite. Both Senna and Schumacher made their mark with early displays of speed and aggression, qualities Verstappen has already shown. As the season progresses, attention will remain on whether Verstappen can sustain this form and develop into a genuine title contender in the coming years.
