Terms of use

These terms are shorter than most, because a site that sells nothing, holds no accounts and takes no payments does not need clauses about refunds, subscriptions or account suspension. What is left is mostly about copying, accuracy and who carries the risk.

Who these terms are with

InAutoNews is published by Data Reach Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales. In these terms, we and us mean that publisher, and you means anyone using the site.

Everything reaches us through the contact page, including rights complaints and anything you would otherwise send in writing.

Accepting them

Using the site means accepting these terms. If you do not accept them, the remedy is to stop using it, and there is nothing further to do because we hold nothing of yours.

Nothing here removes rights you have as a consumer under the law of England and Wales, and where a clause below conflicts with those rights, your rights win.

What you may do without asking

Read the site, print pages for your own use, and save copies for your own reference.

Link to anything here, from anywhere, without asking and without attribution conditions. A link is the thing this publication values most and we are not going to make it awkward.

Quote from articles in your own work, including commercially, with attribution to InAutoNews and a link to the article you took it from. Keep it to what your point actually needs, which is roughly what fair dealing allows anyway. A paragraph inside a piece of your own is fine. Our whole article with a credit line at the bottom is not.

Quote us in academic work, in filings, in Wikipedia, and in anything else that cites sources. If you need a permanent reference and are worried the page will move, write to us and we will confirm the address is stable.

What needs asking about first

• Republishing an article in full or in substantial part, in any medium, whether or not it is credited and whether or not it is behind a paywall.
• Syndication or systematic reproduction of our output, including automated feeds beyond the ordinary use of our RSS feed by a reader's own feed application.
• Bulk extraction. Scraping, harvesting or copying the site or the archive at scale, whether or not the result is published.
• Text and data mining for commercial purposes, including training or fine tuning machine learning models. We reserve our rights in this respect. Our robots.txt currently permits general crawling, and that is a decision about server load rather than a licence to reuse what is found. If you want to use this archive to train something, ask, and there is a reasonable chance the answer is yes on terms.
• Framing the site, or presenting our pages inside your own so that a reader could take them for yours.

Requests go through the contact page under rights and permissions. We answer them, including the ones we decline.

What we own, and what we do not

The articles, headlines, page design, code and the arrangement of the archive index are ours or licensed to us, and are protected by copyright and database right.

Facts are not. A specification, a price, a production figure or a date reported here belongs to nobody, and you are free to use those without reference to us. What is protected is the way we expressed it, and the work of assembling the collection.

Manufacturer names, model names and logos appearing in articles belong to their owners and are used to report on them. Their appearance here implies no endorsement, affiliation or approval in either direction.

The archive, and third party material

This domain published from 2008 to early 2018 under different ownership. The current publisher acquired the domain and not the copyright in that earlier work, so nothing here reproduces it. Articles appearing at historical addresses are newly written, say so on the page, and are ours.

Photographs are a different matter. Images are used under the licences they carry, each one credited beneath the picture and linked to its original, and their rights remain with whoever holds them. A licence we hold does not pass to you: if you want to use a photograph you found here, the person to ask is the credited photographer or agency, not us.

Where an archived image is served by redirecting to the Internet Archive, that material is the Internet Archive's to serve and its rights are unchanged by our pointing at it.

Accuracy, and what this site is not

Articles are written from sources listed on them and corrected when found to be wrong. We take that seriously enough to have written a whole page about it. We do not warrant that everything here is accurate, complete or current, and an article is a record of what was known when it was written.

Nothing on this site is advice. Not financial advice, not legal advice, not engineering or safety advice, and not a recommendation to buy or sell anything, including shares in a company we have written about. Do not make a decision that matters on the strength of one article here without checking it against the primary source, which we have named precisely so that you can.

Older articles stay online as a record. A piece from 2012 describes 2012. It is dated accordingly and it is not an assertion about the present.

Advertising and commercial content

Where content is paid for or supplied by a commercial partner, it is labelled above the article, before the text begins, and its commercial links carry the attributes search engines expect. What we will and will not do commercially is set out on the advertising page, which is part of these terms for this purpose.

We are not party to any dealing between you and an advertiser, and an advert here is not a recommendation from us.

Links to other sites

We link out constantly, because an article that cites its sources has to. Those sites are not ours, we do not control what they publish or how they treat your data, and a link is not an endorsement of anything beyond the specific point it supports.

Things you send us

If you send us a correction, a tip, a document or a photograph, you keep whatever rights you have in it. You give us permission to use it for the purpose you sent it for, which normally means checking it, acting on it, and where relevant publishing the resulting correction or article.

If you want something treated in confidence, say so when you send it and we will respect that. If you want to be credited, say that too. Please do not send us material you are not free to share, particularly material covered by someone else's embargo or confidentiality agreement.

Acceptable use

Do not attempt to interfere with the site or the server it runs on, do not attempt to gain access to any part of it that is not public, and do not use the contact form to send unlawful material or to harass anybody. Automated requests should be at a rate a reasonable person would consider polite, and should identify themselves.

Security researchers are welcome. Tell us what you found through the contact page before publishing it, do not access other people's data while establishing that you could, and we will not come after you for having looked.

Availability

We make no promise that the site is available, uninterrupted or free of faults, and we may change, suspend or withdraw any part of it. We will try not to break addresses that other people have linked to, because keeping those working is more or less the reason this site exists, but we cannot guarantee that every address lives forever.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss arising from your use of the site or from reliance on anything published on it, including lost profits, lost business or the cost of a decision you would not otherwise have made. The site is provided as it is.

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected by anything on this page.

Rights complaints and takedowns

If you believe material here infringes your copyright, or that a photograph is used without a licence permitting it, tell us what it is and where it appears, and give us enough to identify the work and your interest in it.

Every picture on this site records where it came from and the terms it is used under, so most of these are settled quickly in one direction or the other. We do not require a particular form of words before we will look at a claim, and we would rather deal with you directly than through a takedown service.

Complaints about the accuracy of an article are handled under the corrections policy, which is faster than a legal letter and works better.

Governing law

These terms and any dispute arising out of them are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, you keep any right you have to bring proceedings in your own country.

If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest continues to apply.

Changes to these terms

These terms may be revised. The date at the foot of this page is when they were last reviewed, and continuing to use the site after a change means accepting the revised version. Where a change is significant we will say so on the page rather than letting the date do the work.
