SsangYong XAV-Adventure Concept Revealed at Frankfurt
The XAV-Adventure previews SsangYong’s future Korando with a hybrid powertrain, boxy design and advanced chassis tech, as shown at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.
SsangYong took the wraps off its XAV-Adventure Concept at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, presenting a compact SUV that signals the brand’s direction for the next Korando. The concept stands out with its upright, boxy proportions and sits at 4.19 metres long, 1.88 metres high and 1.65 metres wide.
The XAV-Adventure’s design draws on traditional off-roaders, but its technology is firmly forward-looking. SsangYong displayed two versions in Frankfurt: both use hybrid powertrains, one pairing a petrol engine with electric motors, the other combining a diesel engine with the same electric drive system. Each setup uses two electric motors on the rear axle and a third motor on the front, which also acts as a generator. The company calls this arrangement 3S-CUBE.
Hybrid system and chassis technology
The 3S-CUBE system integrates a smart motion control setup, stereo vision sensors and electric air suspension. This allows the XAV-Adventure to automatically adjust its suspension to changing road conditions, aiming to improve both comfort and off-road capability. The hybrid layout is designed to offer all-wheel-drive performance without a traditional mechanical link between the axles.
Positioning and future prospects
The XAV-Adventure is positioned as a preview of the fourth-generation Korando, a model that has been central to SsangYong’s range. Its compact footprint and hybrid powertrain suggest the company is targeting urban buyers who want SUV styling with reduced emissions and improved efficiency. The concept’s chassis technology also hints at an emphasis on ride comfort and adaptability for future production models.
