Fiat 500 MPV (Ellezero) spied ahead of Geneva debut
Fiat’s upcoming 500-based MPV, codenamed Ellezero, has been photographed testing in Livigno, Italy, ahead of its expected unveiling at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.
Fiat’s new 500-based MPV, codenamed Ellezero, has been caught by photographers in Livigno, Italy, as the company prepares for the model’s official unveiling at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. The prototype, heavily camouflaged, was spotted parked at a ski resort, confirming that Fiat’s plans for a larger, more versatile 500 derivative are progressing towards production.
The Ellezero is Fiat’s answer to the B-segment MPV market, where it will compete directly with the Ford B-Max and Opel Meriva in Europe. The new model is expected to be offered in both five- and seven-seat variants, expanding the appeal of the 500 nameplate to buyers needing more space and practicality than the standard city car provides.
Platform and production plans
Fiat will build the Ellezero on its Small U.S. Wide (SUSW) platform, a flexible architecture designed to support compact cars and crossovers for multiple markets. This platform will also underpin a new Jeep crossover, as well as replacements for the Punto and Palio. Production for the Ellezero is set to take place at Fiat’s Serbian plant, which is being prepared for B-segment vehicle assembly.
Engine details have not been confirmed, but the Ellezero is likely to share powertrains with the existing Fiat 500 range. This could include Fiat’s TwinAir and MultiJet engines, as well as possible petrol and diesel options tailored to European and US markets. The MPV is intended for global sale, with a US launch expected to follow its Geneva debut in mid-2012.
Rivals and market positioning
Fiat is positioning the Ellezero to take on rivals such as the Ford B-Max and Opel Meriva, both established players in the European compact MPV segment. The Ellezero’s flexible seating and city car styling are aimed at buyers who want the 500’s character but need more space for families or active lifestyles. The move also broadens the 500 brand’s reach, following special editions and variants such as theFiat 500 Cabrio.
