First leaked images reveal Mercedes-Benz CLA compact sedan
Unofficial images of the new Mercedes-Benz CLA have surfaced online, showing the A-Class-based compact saloon ahead of its expected Detroit debut in January 2013.
The first undisguised images of the Mercedes-Benz CLA compact sedan have appeared on a French car forum, giving a clear look at the brand's new A-Class-based four-door ahead of its official unveiling. The photos show a regular CLA fitted with the AMG design package, highlighting the car's coupé-inspired profile and interior details.
The CLA is Mercedes-Benz's first front-wheel drive saloon, sharing its underpinnings with the A-Class hatchback. At 4.6 metres long, it sits below the C-Class in the range, targeting buyers seeking a more compact alternative to traditional premium saloons. The initial images confirm previous expectations about the CLA's design, with a sloping roofline, frameless doors and a prominent grille, all of which mirror the styling of the larger CLS.
Engine options at launch
According to details accompanying the leaked images, the CLA will launch with four engine choices. Three are petrol: the CLA 180 BlueEFFICIENCY (122hp), CLA 200 BlueEFFICIENCY (156hp) and CLA 250 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY (211hp, all-wheel drive). The initial diesel is the CLA 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, producing 170hp. Further variants, including additional diesels and a high-performance AMG model, are scheduled to follow later in 2013 and 2014.

Interior and equipment
The interior images reveal a dashboard layout similar to the A-Class, with round air vents, a free-standing display and a mix of metallic and gloss trim. The AMG styling package adds sports seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel and contrasting stitching. Standard and optional equipment is expected to include advanced infotainment, connectivity features and driver assistance systems, though full details will be confirmed at launch.
Production and market launch
Mercedes-Benz will build the CLA exclusively at its Kecskemét plant in Hungary. Order books are due to open in mid-January 2013, with the European market launch following in April.
