According to a recent report from LMC Automotive, with over 1.1 million units sold, the Ford Focus is the world’s best-selling vehicle – for the second consecutive year.
Overall Ford sold more than 12 million Focus models since the car was launched in July 1998 in Europe and shortly after, in 1999 in the U.S.
The car is so popular that even Pope Francis is using a Ford Focus.
The automaker is already working to a new model that is expected to hit the market somewhere in 2017 – but according to Ford’s vice president Raj Nair – the upcoming model will not change much.
“Owners talk about rational reasons for purchase, but a fair percentage buy for emotional reasons like styling,” he said.
Toyota ranks #2. The Japanese automaker sold over 1 million Corolla models last year (1,001,141 units). The automaker already presented the facelift model. Introduced in 1966, the Corolla managed to become the best-selling car worldwide by 1974 and has been one of the best-selling cars in the world since then.
Volkswagen was third – not with the Golf, but with the Jetta. The vehicle is present since 1979 and in some markets is sold under Bora or Vento name plates. According to LMC, last year VW sold 906,000 copies.
