Honda takes the wraps off 2017 Civic Hatchback, also reaching the US image

The Japanese automaker has finally introduced the five-door hatchback version of the eponymous Civic compact, and for the first time ever the body style will also become available in the United States.

The new generation Honda Civic is delivering the official take on the five-door hatchback version, with the model reaching its global ambitions by also heading towards the US market. This is of course most important not only for the performance-oriented Sport trim levels, but also because the five door hatchback has always been used as the founding basis of the hardcore Type R model. The 2017 Civic hatchback is taking the new generations cues, with stylish and sloping roofline and upswept beltline. There’s also the Sport Touring model which packs a sporty body kit using a rear wing, new side skirts, and a center-mounted exhaust. Honda says the cargo space will be best-in-class, but didn’t provide figures, while the back legroom sits at 6.0 inches compared to 37.4 in the sedan and 35.9 in the coupe.

All hatchback versions will be powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, though using two power guises. The LX, EX, and EX-L trims pack 174 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, while Sport and Sport Touring, deliver 180 hp and 162 lb-ft. The LX, Sport, and EX will also have a six-speed manual gearbox, while the CVT is standard on each Civic hatch – returning an expected 31 miles per gallon city and 40 mpg highway. Just like in the Civic sedan and coupe, there’s more than generous specs: Honda’s Display Audio touchscreen infotainment system, heated seats, power front seats, and remote start. The safety is also top nothch – Honda Sensing active-safety suite comes as an option, with standard LED headlights, heated rear seats, and Honda Sensing on the 2017 Honda Civic Sport Touring.
