According to senior engineering sources from Daimler, the new 9-speed automatic will be introduced on large-capacity engines. The 9-speed transmission is reported to have huge improvements in fuel-economy and CO2 emissions.
According to those same sources, the new slushbox will be used on large displacement engines, meaning that it will most certainly come equipped on AMG models. Anything more than a 9-speed is unlikely though, as engineers believe that along with certain technical obstacles, consumers don’t want that much shifting.
Coincidentally, it’s also what they believe to be the limit of customer’s patience. After all, we’re talking about luxury sedans.
Audi and Chrysler recently joined Toyota’s eight-speed push, and while there’s no official word from Mercedes-Benz, it was only a matter of time before someone added another cog.
