According to a person with knowledge of the South Korean automaker’s plans, the company would also introduce the upcoming ix25 subcompact SUV on the European and US markets.
Hyundai has already showed us how the model is going to look like – a near-production concept version of the model has been displayed during the Beijing auto show earlier this year and the model premiered during the Chengdu auto show in August. Now, it looks like the European and US versions are coming to the market in 2017, said the source, who declined to reveal its identity.
The European small and compact SUV segments have exploded in recent years, with the first growing 89% during the first six months of the year, according to figures from JATO Dynamics reaching deliveries of 390,100 units. IHS Automotive predicts the segment would continue to rise, with full-year sales above the half a million mark and jumping to 1 million units annually by 2020.
The ix25 is right now reaching dealerships in China, where it’s also produced. For now, the company – through a spokesperson – declined to officially confirm the model’s introduction in Europe – as the model was purposely built for the Chinese market.
The model is not very hard to convert for European and US production, as it was developed on the same platform that underpins the Kia Soul – according to Chinese media reports.
