Kia launches updated 2016 Soul EV with new entry-level model
The 2016 Kia Soul EV arrives with a revised line-up, new colours and a lower-priced entry variant, aiming to broaden its appeal in the electric car market.
Kia has officially revealed the 2016 Soul EV, expanding the line-up with a new entry-level trim and introducing minor updates across the range. The new Soul EV-e model lowers the starting price to $31,950 in the United States, targeting buyers looking for a more accessible route into electric motoring.
The 2016 Soul EV range now comprises three trims: EV-e, EV, and EV+ (marketed as 'plus'), up from two in the previous year. The new EV-e trim is designed to bring the Soul EV’s standard features to a lower price point. Standard equipment includes a multi-function steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity, a six-speaker audio system, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. All variants now also receive a charge port nozzle lock and illuminated AUX/USB ports as standard.
Kia has added two new exterior paint options for 2016: Shadow Black and Bright Silver. These join the existing palette, giving buyers more choice in personalising their vehicle. The EV+ trim can now be specified with a Sun & Fun Package, which adds a panoramic sunroof, LED interior lighting, and speaker lights that pulse with the music for an additional $1,100.
Technical details remain unchanged
The Soul EV continues to use a 27 kWh lithium-ion battery paired with a 109 hp (81 kW) electric motor delivering 284 Nm of torque. Performance figures remain the same as the previous model: 0-62 mph in 11.3 seconds and a top speed of 90 mph (144 km/h). No changes have been made to the powertrain or battery capacity for 2016.
Position in the market
By expanding the Soul EV range and reducing the entry price, Kia aims to attract buyers who may have previously considered rivals such as the Nissan Leaf or Chevrolet Spark EV. The additional standard equipment and new colour options are intended to keep the model competitive in a segment where features and value are key.
