Renault is expected to confirm its takeover of the Lotus Formula One team at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, according to sources cited by Auto Motor und Sport’s Michael Schmidt. The deal, which would see Renault return as a full works team, follows months of speculation and protracted negotiations.

Bernie Ecclestone had previously warned that a decision could be delayed until December, but new reports suggest the agreement is already in place. Lotus has struggled with financial difficulties throughout the season, but a key debt has now been settled, clearing a major obstacle to the French manufacturer’s return.

Lotus deputy team principal Federico Gastaldi said the team is working hard behind the scenes and expects to make strong announcements soon. In parallel, Renault has been securing long-term contracts with Enstone staff, an indication that preparations for the transition are well advanced.

Late engine switch for Enstone

If confirmed, the buyout will force a late change of engine supplier for Lotus, which currently uses Mercedes power units. Technical director Nick Chester acknowledged the challenge but said the team would cope with the tight timeframe. The final engine development for Red Bull, Renault’s remaining customer, has already been approved for this year.
