Audi A3 Sedan earns IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus rating
Audi’s new A3 Sedan has secured the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s highest award after strong crash-test results and advanced safety features.
Audi’s A3 Sedan has been awarded the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick Plus rating, following a series of crash tests conducted in early 2014. The compact saloon achieved top marks for occupant protection and active safety systems, making it one of the safest cars in its class at launch.
The IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus is reserved for vehicles that perform well in a range of crash scenarios and offer effective crash-avoidance technology. The A3 Sedan scored ‘good’ in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests, and met the requirements for front crash prevention technology, according to the IIHS assessment published in March 2014.
Audi equipped the A3 Sedan with an array of safety features as standard. These include electronic stability control, daytime running lights, front and rear head curtain airbags, front and rear seat-mounted torso airbags, knee airbags for both driver and front passenger, and a rollover sensor to deploy side curtain airbags in the event of an impending rollover. Antilock brakes and separate airbags in the lower instrument panel were also part of the standard package.
Crash-test results and safety technology
The A3 Sedan’s performance in the IIHS small overlap front test, a challenging scenario introduced to simulate a collision with a tree or pole, was key to securing the Top Safety Pick Plus status. Vehicles must demonstrate strong structural integrity and effective restraint systems to achieve a ‘good’ rating. The A3’s occupant compartment held its shape well, and the airbag and seatbelt systems provided effective protection for both driver and front passenger.
Front crash prevention technology, a requirement for the Plus designation, was available on the A3 Sedan. This included forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, designed to help avoid or mitigate frontal impacts. The IIHS recognised these features as contributing to the model’s high safety rating.
Market position and implications for buyers
Audi positioned the A3 Sedan as an entry-level premium saloon, with a starting price of $29,900 in the US at launch. The addition of the Top Safety Pick Plus rating gave the model a strong selling point for buyers prioritising safety. At the time, few compact premium saloons matched the A3’s combination of crash protection and active safety technology as standard equipment.
The A3 Sedan’s safety credentials meant it competed not only with traditional rivals from BMW and Mercedes-Benz, but also with mainstream models that had previously set the benchmark for crash performance. For buyers, the IIHS award provided independent assurance of the A3’s protective capabilities and helped distinguish it in a crowded segment.
