Tesla has released a new promotional video for its Model S, giving the public its most detailed look yet at the all-electric saloon ahead of first deliveries scheduled for summer 2012. The video showcases the Model S’s design, performance and technology as Tesla prepares to enter the premium executive segment with its first mass-produced model.

Model S features and performance

The Model S is offered with three battery capacities: 40 kWh, 60 kWh and 85 kWh. Tesla claims the largest 85 kWh pack provides a range of up to 300 miles (483 km) on a single charge under ideal conditions. The Performance version, using the same 85 kWh battery, is said to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, targeting buyers looking for both efficiency and speed in an electric saloon.

Tesla’s video highlights the Model S’s five-door liftback design, which offers a spacious interior and a practical boot. The car seats up to seven when fitted with optional rear-facing child seats, a feature not found in most rivals. The minimalist dashboard is dominated by a 17-inch touchscreen, controlling navigation, media and vehicle settings.

Options and technology previewed

Tesla’s promotional video also previews a range of options available on the Model S. Features include Nappa leather upholstery, a seven-speaker audio system, a tech package with turn-by-turn navigation, a power liftgate, keyless entry, xenon headlamps, a rear-view camera, and active air suspension. Buyers can also specify an all-glass panoramic roof and 19-inch wheels. Twin onboard chargers and a high-power wall charger are available for faster home charging, underlining Tesla’s focus on usability for everyday drivers.

Market context and upcoming launch

The Model S is Tesla’s first attempt at a mainstream production saloon, following the low-volume Roadster. The company has positioned the Model S as a direct competitor to established premium saloons, but with a fully electric drivetrain. Customer deliveries are due to begin in summer 2012, with initial production focused on North America. Early interest has been strong, with Tesla aiming to prove that a long-range electric car can compete with petrol and diesel rivals for both performance and practicality.
