2015 Ford Mustang Production Kicks Off in Michigan
Ford has begun building the sixth-generation Mustang at Flat Rock, with the coupe on the line from July 2014 and the convertible to follow in September.
Ford started production of the 2015 Mustang coupe at its Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan on 14 July 2014, marking the arrival of the sixth generation of its iconic muscle car. The convertible model is scheduled to join the line in mid-September. This launch signals the first time the Mustang is being built for global markets from the outset.
Flat Rock Assembly Plant gears up for global Mustang
Flat Rock Assembly, which has produced Mustangs since 2004, is now building the new model for both North American and export markets. The sixth-generation Mustang is the first to be engineered with right-hand drive in mind, enabling Ford to sell the car in more than 120 countries, including the UK and other major European markets. The plant has invested in new tooling and processes to accommodate the model’s updated platform and increased production complexity.
Ford’s decision to launch the Mustang as a global car comes as demand for American performance cars grows overseas. The company reported that the first 500 Mustangs allocated to Europe were reserved in just 30 seconds during the UEFA Champions League final, with more than 9,300 people registering interest for a chance to order the car. The Flat Rock plant is expected to ramp up output to meet both domestic and international demand.
Engine options and market rollout
The 2015 Mustang is available with three engines: a 3.7-litre V6 producing 300hp and 365Nm, a new 2.3-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost rated at 305hp and 406Nm, and a 5.0-litre V8 in the GT, developing 420hp and 528Nm. The coupe is the first to reach showrooms, with US sales scheduled for September 2014. The convertible will follow, with production starting in September and sales expected from late October. European deliveries are set to begin after North American launch, as Ford builds inventory for export.
