MINI Cooper JCW debuts at Detroit with 228hp turbo engine
MINI unveiled the new John Cooper Works hot hatch at the 2015 Detroit Motor Show, featuring a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine and aggressive styling updates.
MINI introduced the new John Cooper Works (JCW) version of the latest-generation Cooper at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, confirming its place as the brand’s most powerful production model to date. The hot hatch arrives with a 2.0-litre TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine developing 228hp and 320Nm of torque.
The JCW’s performance figures put it at the sharp end of the small hot hatch segment. MINI claims a 0-60mph time of 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 153mph. Power is sent to the front wheels via either a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox, with an Electronic Differential Lock Control system fitted as standard. Braking is upgraded with high-performance hardware, and the chassis gains a sport-tuned suspension setup.
Styling and interior changes
The JCW stands apart from the standard Cooper with a revised front end featuring honeycomb grille inserts, larger air intakes and a prominent tailgate spoiler. Aerodynamic side skirts, a rear diffuser and a centre-mounted dual exhaust underline the car’s sporting intent. Standard wheels are 17-inch alloys, while LED headlights complete the exterior update.
Inside, the JCW receives bespoke Dinamica/fabric sports seats, a sport steering wheel, piano black trim, stainless steel pedals and JCW-branded sill plates. Instrumentation has also been revised to reflect the car’s performance focus.
Pricing and availability
MINI set the US starting price at $30,600 before an $850 destination charge. The JCW sits at the top of the Cooper range, above the Cooper S, offering buyers a sharper drive and more aggressive styling.
