BMW USA has introduced the i3 Shadow Sport Edition, a highly limited run of just 50 cars designed specifically for the American market. This special edition brings features not previously offered on the US i3, most notably a moonroof and a sport-tuned suspension. With its exclusive styling and equipment, the Shadow Sport Edition aims to offer a more distinctive and rare alternative to the standard i3.

Unique Design and Features

The i3 Shadow Sport Edition stands out with its Fluid Black exterior, a colour not previously available on American i3s. Inside, the car features the Deka World interior in dark grey with blue accents, which sets it apart from standard models. The interior also includes a dark cloth trim, contributing to the edition’s unique atmosphere. BMW has equipped the Shadow Sport with 19-inch Cyclone-style alloy wheels, further enhancing its visual presence.

A key addition for the Shadow Sport Edition is the moonroof, which has been available in Europe but makes its US debut on this model. This is the first time American customers can order an i3 with a moonroof, offering increased natural light and a more open feel to the cabin. The car also receives a sport-tuned suspension, which is designed to deliver sharper handling and improved driving dynamics compared to the standard i3. This suspension features enhanced dampening characteristics, aiming to provide better stability and control.

Each Shadow Sport Edition is marked by a special badge indicating its limited status. The exclusivity is further emphasised by the fact that only 50 units will be produced for the US market. This ensures that owners will have a rare version of BMW’s electric city car, appealing to collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Performance and Powertrain

The Shadow Sport Edition is offered exclusively as a pure electric model, with no range extender option available. Power comes from the familiar 22 kWh lithium-ion battery paired with an electric motor delivering 170 bhp (126 kW) and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) of torque. According to BMW, the i3 Shadow Sport can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in seven seconds and reach a top speed of 93 mph (149 km/h). Under standard driving conditions, the typical range is quoted at 80 to 100 miles (128 to 160 km), making it suitable for city commuting and short trips.

Market Position and Pricing

BMW positions the Shadow Sport Edition as a more exclusive and premium alternative to the standard i3. With an MSRP starting at $47,400, it is aimed at buyers who value rarity and unique features in their electric vehicles. The limited production run and special equipment package make it attractive to those seeking something beyond the ordinary in the compact electric segment.

The Shadow Sport joins a tradition of limited-run special editions from premium brands. Similar releases include the BMW X6 M Performance Edition and the Porsche Cayman S Black Edition, both of which offered unique styling and equipment in strictly limited numbers. These models tend to appeal to enthusiasts and collectors who appreciate exclusivity and distinctive design details.

Summary

With only 50 units available, the BMW i3 Shadow Sport Edition brings new features and a heightened sense of exclusivity to the US electric car market. Its combination of unique styling, the debut of the moonroof, and a sport-tuned suspension set it apart from standard i3 models, making it a notable option for those seeking a rare and distinctive electric city car.
