Mercedes GLE 63 AMG Coupe tipped for Detroit debut
Mercedes is expected to unveil the high-performance GLE 63 AMG Coupe at the 2015 North American International Auto Show, taking aim at rivals like the BMW X6 M.
Mercedes-Benz is preparing to introduce the GLE 63 AMG Coupe at the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, according to reports ahead of the event. The model will sit at the top of the GLE Coupe range, offering a direct challenge to the BMW X6 M in the high-performance SUV-coupe segment.
The GLE 63 AMG Coupe is expected to feature a more aggressive exterior than the standard GLE Coupe, with unique AMG bodywork, larger wheels and brakes, and quad exhaust outlets. The interior is likely to follow AMG tradition, with sport seats, distinctive trim, and upgraded equipment compared to lower-spec models.
AMG powertrain expected
While Mercedes has not confirmed engine details, speculation centres on the 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 already seen in the AMG GT and C63 AMG. Depending on the state of tune, this unit produces between 462hp and 510hp, with torque figures ranging from 600Nm to 650Nm. These outputs would put the GLE 63 AMG Coupe squarely in competition with the BMW X6 M’s 575hp twin-turbo V8.
A nine-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel drive are expected, following the pattern set by other AMG SUVs. Precise performance figures and technical specifications are likely to be confirmed at the Detroit show.
Position in the Mercedes SUV line-up
The GLE 63 AMG Coupe extends Mercedes’ strategy of offering AMG variants across its SUV portfolio. The standard GLE Coupe, which was revealed in late 2014, is already positioned as a direct rival to the BMW X6. The AMG version aims to attract buyers looking for more power and a sharper driving experience, as well as a more assertive appearance.
