We’re down for Porsches any way you look at it, especially when one of the vehicles is a vintage example – but we did find the idea a bit too quirky even for us, though just for a fleeting moment.

The masterminds behind the Porsche Club of America decided to pit a vintage sports car against a modern crossover – and of course selected Porsche models for the battle. So what we have here is a 30-year old Porsche 944 Turbo that would go head to head with a new Porsche Macan GTS – in a safe environment, the Virginia International Raceway. We’re not going to spoil the outcome, but you should be warned there are some surprises along the way.

If we look at the specifications, of course the Macan clearly has the upper hand – biturbo V6 good for 360 horsepower and all-wheel drive for lots of grip. The Macan GTS will sprint to 60 miles per hour in about 5 seconds, on its way to 159 mph. Meanwhile the 944 Turbo has just 217 horsepower from its front-mounted four-cylinder, sending power to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual. It will sprint in six seconds and top out at 153 mph, which is plenty close. Remember though, the 944 is just around the 1,4 ton mark, whereas the Macan is closer to the two-ton threshold…
