Volvo S90 scale model leak reveals key design features
Fresh images of a 1:43 scale model have surfaced, offering a clear look at the upcoming Volvo S90 saloon’s styling ahead of its official debut.
A new set of images showing a 1:43 scale model of the Volvo S90 has leaked online, giving the clearest indication yet of how the Swedish brand’s next flagship saloon will look when it replaces the S80. The model, which surfaced in October 2015, reveals several production-intent styling cues and confirms Volvo’s move to a more modern design language for its executive saloon.
The leaked model shows a saloon with large C-shaped taillights, a prominent front grille and headlight arrangement closely echoing the XC90 SUV, and a gently sloping roofline. The rear features large VOLVO lettering across the bootlid, a styling cue introduced on recent models. The front badge is also notably oversized, though production versions may see some changes.
Volvo’s S90 will be built on the Scalable Product Architecture, the same platform underpinning the XC90. The new car is expected to offer a more spacious cabin than the outgoing S80, with particular gains for rear passengers. The scale model images suggest a longer wheelbase and a more substantial presence overall.
Design links to the XC90 and future V90 estate
The S90’s front styling borrows heavily from the XC90, with the Thor’s Hammer LED signature and a bold grille. This approach aligns with Volvo’s current design direction, aiming for a family resemblance across its range. The scale model’s proportions and detailing point to a more upmarket positioning for the S90 compared to the S80.

Production and launch timing remain unconfirmed
The scale model is reportedly one of 20 that were stolen by a Volvo employee, according to reports from China. The official unveiling date for the full-size S90 has not been confirmed, but industry sources in late 2015 suggested a reveal could take place within a few months. Until then, the leaked model provides the most detailed preview of Volvo’s new saloon.
