Fluid MotorUnion transforms 2009 BMW M3 E90 into high-performance parts runner
Illinois-based tuner Fluid MotorUnion modified a 2009 BMW M3 E90 saloon with upgraded suspension, brakes and engine internals for daily use and occasional spirited driving.
Fluid MotorUnion, a tuning and performance workshop based in Illinois, selected a 2009 BMW M3 E90 saloon as its in-house shop car, using it both for parts delivery and as a platform to showcase its technical capabilities. The team applied a suite of modifications to enhance the car’s handling, braking and engine performance, turning a standard M3 into a distinctive example of a tuned daily driver.
Suspension and brake upgrades for daily use
To address both practicality and performance, Fluid MotorUnion fitted the M3 with a set of fully adjustable H&R springs and dampers. This allowed them to fine-tune ride height and handling for the demands of daily driving as well as occasional spirited runs. The original BMW brakes were swapped for a Rotora big brake kit, featuring 8-piston calipers and 380mm rotors at the front, and 4-piston calipers with matching rotors at the rear. The substantial increase in braking power was intended to ensure reliable stopping performance, particularly given the car’s increased output and intended use as a parts runner that might encounter varied road conditions.
Engine modifications and performance gains
The M3’s naturally aspirated 4.0-litre V8 (S65) was further enhanced with a set of 292-degree Schrick camshafts. Fluid MotorUnion aimed to extract more power and sharper throttle response, with the camshafts contributing to a claimed increase of over 50 horsepower above the factory figure of 420hp. The car also received a new intake system, chosen both for its contribution to the engine’s sound and to complement the camshaft upgrade. These changes were designed to give the M3 a more aggressive character while retaining its usability for everyday tasks.

Fluid MotorUnion’s choice of the M3 E90 saloon was driven by a need for a practical shop vehicle that could handle the daily routine of parts delivery while also serving as a demonstrator for the company’s tuning expertise.
