Audi has released an official teaser image of the 2010 A8, providing the first glimpse of its next-generation luxury saloon. The image, which shows the car alongside Audi’s Board Member for Technical Development, Michael Dick, comes ahead of the model’s expected production start in early 2010.

The new A8 will be built on Audi’s next-generation aluminium space frame, a structure that has underpinned the A8 since its inception but is now set for further refinement. Audi plans to offer four engine options at launch, with both petrol and diesel versions of 3.0-litre and 4.2-litre V8s. This mix is aimed at buyers seeking a balance between performance and efficiency in the luxury saloon segment.

Styling cues and technology

The teaser image reveals the presence of new LED daytime running lights, echoing the design language introduced on the latest A4. Although the car itself remains largely hidden, the lighting signature and grille suggest a clear evolution from the outgoing model. Early indications are that the 2010 A8 may be slightly shorter than its predecessor, though Audi has yet to confirm final dimensions.

Audi had originally planned to debut the new A8 at the Frankfurt motor show in September 2009. However, reports indicate that the full unveiling has been postponed. The company has not given a revised date for the public reveal, but production is still scheduled to begin at the start of 2010.

Engine options for the new flagship

  • 3.0-litre petrol V8
  • 3.0-litre diesel V8
  • 4.2-litre petrol V8
  • 4.2-litre diesel V8

The engine range continues Audi’s strategy of providing both petrol and diesel options in its luxury models. Details on power outputs and performance figures have not yet been released. The new A8 will compete directly with rivals such as the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class, both of which have recently updated their own engine line-ups.

With the first official image now released, attention turns to when Audi will fully unveil the car and confirm final specifications. The A8 remains a key product for Audi in the luxury saloon market, and the new model is expected to bring further advances in technology and efficiency.
