BMW has confirmed that the 2010 ActiveHybrid X6 will arrive in US dealerships on 5 December 2009 with a starting price of $89,725, including destination and handling. This figure places the hybrid SUV well above the standard X6 xDrive50i, reflecting both its complex drivetrain and a lengthy list of standard equipment.

Hybrid drivetrain and performance

The ActiveHybrid X6 is BMW’s first production hybrid and uses a two-mode hybrid system integrated with the company’s 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8. The system is paired to a unique 7-speed automatic transmission developed specifically for the hybrid model. BMW positions the ActiveHybrid X6 as a performance-oriented SUV, combining electric drive with the output of a petrol V8 to deliver strong acceleration and towing capacity, while aiming to reduce fuel consumption compared to the conventional X6 models.

Standard equipment and options

The $89,725 price includes a number of features that are optional on the X6 xDrive50i. Among these are Extended Nappa leather covering not only the seats but also the dashboard and centre console, 20-inch Aero wheels with mixed-size performance tyres, and a head-up display. The standard package also comprises a rearview camera with Top View, BMW Assist with Bluetooth, power tailgate, premium sound system, 6-disc DVD changer, iPod and USB adapter, Comfort Access, soft-close doors, four-zone climate control, heated front seats, and more. The list positions the ActiveHybrid X6 as the most comprehensively equipped X6 variant available at launch.

  • 7-speed automatic transmission
  • Extended Nappa leather (seats, dashboard, and centre console)
  • 20-inch Aero wheels with mixed-size performance tyres
  • Rearview camera with Top View
  • Head-up display
  • BMW Assist with Bluetooth
  • Power tailgate
  • Premium sound system
  • 6-disc DVD changer
  • iPod and USB adapter
  • Comfort Access and soft-close doors
  • Four-zone climate control
  • Heated front seats

Buyers can further customise the ActiveHybrid X6 with options such as active ventilated seats ($1,100), a Cold Weather Package ($900), rear side window shades ($300), satellite radio ($350), rear seat entertainment system ($1,700), smartphone integration ($150), and an enhanced premium sound system ($700). Sport seats and 19-inch wheels with all-season tyres are available at no additional charge. This approach allows customers to tailor the vehicle to their preferences, but the base specification is already extensive.

Position in BMW’s hybrid strategy

The launch of the ActiveHybrid X6 marks BMW’s entry into the hybrid SUV segment, joining a small group of luxury manufacturers offering petrol-electric drivetrains in large four-wheel-drive models. The X6 hybrid’s arrival follows BMW’s stated EfficientDynamics strategy, which aims to combine performance with improved efficiency. The ActiveHybrid X6 was introduced to the public at the Los Angeles International Auto Show, and its US launch precedes the arrival of other BMW hybrids, such as the ActiveHybrid 5, which would appear later in the range.
