Volkswagen reveals all-new 2011 Jetta with fresh platform and larger body
Volkswagen's 2011 Jetta breaks from its Golf-based roots, gaining a new platform, longer wheelbase and a choice of turbocharged petrol engines.
Volkswagen has released the first official details and images of the 2011 Jetta, marking a major departure from the previous model’s Golf-based underpinnings. Due on sale later in 2010, the new Jetta sits on a fresh platform and stretches 90mm longer than its predecessor, promising more space and a more upmarket stance in the compact saloon segment.
The shift away from the Golf’s platform is a notable change for the Jetta, which has long shared its architecture with Volkswagen’s popular hatchback. The new structure allows for a longer wheelbase, resulting in improved rear legroom and a more substantial profile. The 2011 Jetta’s exterior styling is sharper and more angular, aligning it with Volkswagen’s latest design direction.
Volkswagen is offering a choice of turbocharged petrol engines at launch. The entry-level 1.4-litre TSI produces 121 horsepower, while a 2.0-litre TSI tops the range at 200 horsepower. Both engines are paired with manual or automatic transmissions, depending on market. The company has indicated that BlueMotion technology, featuring regenerative braking and stop-start systems, will be available on selected models to boost fuel efficiency.
Standard equipment and pricing
Despite the sub-$16,000 entry price in the United States, Volkswagen says the 2011 Jetta will not be a stripped-back offering. Standard kit includes air conditioning, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry and a CD player. Higher trim levels are expected to add features such as alloy wheels, leather upholstery and advanced infotainment options.
Positioning and rivals
With the new platform and larger body, Volkswagen is clearly aiming the Jetta at buyers who might otherwise consider mid-sized saloons from rival brands. The car’s increased dimensions bring it closer to the likes of the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic sedans, both key players in the global compact market. The move also allows Volkswagen to differentiate the Jetta more clearly from the Golf, which remains focused on hatchback buyers.
The 2011 Jetta’s arrival is part of a broader product push from the Volkswagen Group, which is launching several new models across its brands in 2011. For more on the group’s upcoming launches, see VW Group to Launch Key New Models in 2011.
Engines and technology
The Jetta’s new engine range reflects Volkswagen’s focus on downsized turbocharged units for efficiency and performance. The 1.4 TSI is expected to be the volume seller in Europe, while the 2.0 TSI will appeal to drivers seeking more power. BlueMotion features, if offered, could further improve the Jetta’s running costs, especially in markets where emissions and fuel economy are key buying factors.
Volkswagen has not yet confirmed the full engine line-up for all markets, nor detailed the diesel options likely to be offered in Europe. Details on safety features, Euro NCAP ratings and local pricing will be released closer to each market’s launch.
What the new Jetta means for buyers
For buyers, the 2011 Jetta brings a bigger, more refined car with a broader appeal. The move to a dedicated platform and the introduction of more efficient engines position the Jetta as a stronger contender in the compact saloon market. Those needing more space than a Golf hatchback offers, or seeking a saloon with strong standard equipment at a competitive price, will find the new Jetta a more convincing proposition than before.
