2012 Audi A6 debuts with lighter body and advanced tech
Audi’s new A6 arrives in early 2011 with a lighter structure, a choice of efficient engines, and a suite of new assistance and multimedia systems.
Audi’s 2012 A6 saloon arrives in European showrooms from early 2011, introducing a lighter body, new powertrains including a forthcoming hybrid, and a comprehensive set of driver assistance and multimedia systems aimed at the executive market.
The new A6 is built on an aluminium and high-strength steel structure, reducing weight compared to its predecessor while improving torsional rigidity and safety. Audi has focused on lowering the car’s drag coefficient to 0.26, despite a slightly wider and lower body, with a longer wheelbase for improved interior space. At 4.92 metres long and 1.87 metres wide, the A6 remains firmly in the full-size executive segment.
Engine options at launch include three petrol and three TDI diesel units, with outputs ranging from 177hp to 300hp. The A6 hybrid will follow, pairing a 2.0-litre TFSI engine with a 45hp electric motor. Audi claims the hybrid will reach 62mph in 7.3 seconds and achieve 45.6mpg on the combined cycle. Transmission choices include manual, multitronic CVT, and S tronic dual-clutch gearboxes, depending on engine specification.
Technology and interior features
Audi has equipped the A6 with its latest MMI navigation plus system, including an optional handwriting-recognition touchpad. The system integrates with various assistance features, such as adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane assist, and Audi pre sense safety technology. A head-up display is available, projecting key information onto the windscreen.
- Eight-inch colour monitor and online connectivity via a partnership with Google
- Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System
- Optional ambient lighting and ventilated, massaging front seats
- WLAN hotspot for passengers’ devices
The interior adopts a ‘wrap-around’ design, with high-quality materials and layered-wood veneer available. Noise insulation and hydraulic damping are designed to keep the cabin quiet at speed. The car’s ergonomics and control layout follow Audi’s latest standards, with a focus on driver-centred operation.
Safety and assistance systems
Advanced driver assistance systems use data from the navigation and sensor suite to anticipate hazards. Audi pre sense can reduce or prevent accidents in many scenarios, while the adaptive cruise and lane assist systems work together to support the driver in traffic. The A6’s pedestrian detection system, using infrared technology, is among the most sophisticated in the segment.
Position in Audi’s range
While the A6 retains a classic saloon silhouette, Audi positions the A7 for buyers seeking a more coupe-like profile. The A6’s design takes cues from the A7 but remains distinct, with sharper lines and a more upright stance. Audi has not yet confirmed UK pricing or detailed availability beyond the German market. The A6 will compete with the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, aiming to distinguish itself with technology, efficiency and a lighter structure.
