Toyota has announced that Malaysian customers can now place orders for the 2012 Fortuner and Hilux, with deliveries expected to begin in October. The move brings the updated SUV and pickup to a market where both models have established a strong presence, particularly among buyers seeking rugged, practical vehicles for both urban and off-road use.

The 2012 Fortuner, based on the same platform as the Hilux, continues to target families and business users looking for a robust seven-seater SUV. While Toyota has not detailed major design changes for the Malaysian Fortuner this year, the model is expected to retain its familiar body-on-frame construction, high ground clearance and the availability of both petrol and diesel engines, depending on specification.

For the Hilux, Toyota notes that the facelifted version already arrived in Malaysia in September 2011, so the 2012 update brings only minor changes. The most notable is a revision to the power output for the 2.5-litre Double Cab model, though Toyota has not released specific figures in this announcement. Equipment and styling otherwise remain in line with the previous update.

What buyers can expect from the 2012 Fortuner

The Fortuner remains positioned as a practical alternative to more expensive SUVs, offering seating for seven and a reputation for durability. Malaysian buyers can expect the 2012 model to continue with Toyota’s established engine choices, likely including a 2.7-litre petrol and a 2.5-litre diesel, paired with either automatic or manual transmissions. Standard features typically include dual airbags, ABS, and a multi-zone air conditioning system, though final Malaysian specifications will be confirmed closer to launch.

  • Seating for seven occupants
  • Petrol and diesel engine options expected
  • Automatic and manual transmissions available

Hilux update focuses on powertrain

Toyota’s revision to the Hilux 2.5 Double Cab’s power output is the only technical change highlighted for 2012. The Hilux, which competes directly with models such as the Mitsubishi Triton and Nissan Navara in Malaysia, has a strong following among commercial and private buyers. The update is intended to keep the model competitive in a segment where engine performance is a key selling point.

Market context and competition

The Fortuner and Hilux face competition from other Japanese and local brands in Malaysia’s SUV and pickup segments. The Fortuner’s main rivals include the Ford Everest and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, while the Hilux contends with the Isuzu D-Max, Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi Triton. Toyota’s reputation for reliability and the widespread service network remain key advantages for both models.

Further details on pricing and final specifications will be released by Toyota Malaysia closer to the local launch. For buyers considering alternatives in the segment, the market is also seeing new arrivals such as the Ford Everest, which was recently unveiled with a focus on off-road ability.
