Acura reveals full details of 2014 RLX Sport Hybrid ahead of LA debut
Acura has outlined the hybrid powertrain, new technology and cabin features for the 2014 RLX Sport Hybrid, which will debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show before sales begin in spring 2014.
Acura has released full specifications for the 2014 RLX Sport Hybrid, confirming a combined output of 377hp from its advanced three-motor hybrid system ahead of the car’s public debut at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show. The RLX Sport Hybrid is set to reach US dealerships in spring 2014, positioned as the flagship saloon in Acura’s line-up.
Hybrid powertrain and performance
The RLX Sport Hybrid’s drivetrain combines a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which incorporates its own electric motor. At the rear axle, two further electric motors provide additional drive, allowing for all-wheel drive operation and torque vectoring. Power is supplied by a 260-volt lithium-ion battery. Acura claims the full system delivers 377hp, making it the most powerful RLX variant. The hybrid system’s configuration is similar in concept to the one used in the NSX supercar, though tuned for saloon duties.
The company expects the RLX Sport Hybrid to return EPA fuel economy figures of 28mpg in the city, 32mpg on the highway, and 30mpg combined. These numbers position the car as one of the more efficient large hybrid saloons in its segment, with performance that rivals conventional V6 competitors. No official acceleration figures have been released at this stage.
Cabin technology and features
Acura has introduced several new features to the RLX Sport Hybrid’s interior. The model gains a head-up display, projecting key information onto the windscreen. The traditional gear lever has been replaced by an electronic gear selector on the centre console, freeing up space and giving the cabin a more modern layout. The infotainment system uses a seven-inch On Demand Multi-Use Display, and the RLX also incorporates the AcuraLink connectivity suite. These upgrades are intended to reinforce the RLX’s position as a technology-focused flagship.
Position in the range and market context
The RLX Sport Hybrid will sit above the standard RLX in the Acura range, offering greater power, improved fuel efficiency and new technology. Pricing has not been announced, but the hybrid is expected to command a premium over the non-hybrid RLX. The car will compete with other large hybrid saloons, including the Lexus GS450h and the Infiniti Q70 Hybrid, both of which use different hybrid configurations.
