Subaru Viziv 2 Concept debuts at 2014 Geneva show
Subaru has revealed the Viziv 2 Concept at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, previewing its future hybrid all-wheel-drive technology and design direction for SUVs.
Subaru pulled the covers off the Viziv 2 Concept at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, presenting a four-seat SUV study that signals the brand’s next steps in hybrid all-wheel-drive technology and exterior design. The Viziv 2 follows the original Viziv Concept from 2013, but this time with a more production-oriented body and a new plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The Viziv 2’s proportions are unmistakably SUV, but Subaru has layered in sharp creases and hexagonal motifs that set it apart from its current line-up. A bold hexagonal grille, C-shaped LED headlamps and repeated geometric shapes at the rear give the concept a more technical look. Subaru says the design balances utility and style, aiming to appeal to buyers looking for both practicality and a distinctive presence.
Under the skin, the Viziv 2 Concept introduces a hybrid system built around a 1.6-litre direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine. The engine drives the front wheels with help from an electric motor, while two independent electric motors power the rear axle. Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system is reimagined here, with the rear motors able to vary torque between the left and right wheels, previewing a future evolution of the brand’s drivetrain technology.
Hybrid drivetrain and all-wheel-drive technology
The hybrid system is paired with a Lineartronic CVT, and the drivetrain is designed to optimise both fuel efficiency and on-road performance. Subaru claims this configuration allows the Viziv 2 to deliver strong acceleration while reducing emissions compared to a conventional petrol SUV. The use of separate rear motors also means the system can actively manage traction in challenging conditions, a nod to Subaru’s longstanding reputation for capable all-wheel-drive vehicles.
Inside, the Viziv 2 is configured for four passengers, with an interior layout focused on space and comfort. While Subaru has not released full interior details, the concept’s cabin is intended to showcase future possibilities for connectivity and driver assistance features. The emphasis remains on blending everyday usability with advanced technology.
Signals for Subaru’s future SUVs
Although the Viziv 2 is a concept, it is widely seen as a preview of Subaru’s next-generation SUV design and hybrid technology. The shift towards electrified drivetrains is clear, with the brand using Geneva’s stage to underline its commitment to combining environmental responsibility with its core all-wheel-drive strengths. The Viziv 2’s styling cues and technical features may influence future production models, including possible successors to the Forester or Outback.
