BMW has officially taken the covers off the second-generation X6, releasing full details ahead of the model’s first public appearance at the 2014 Moscow Motor Show. The new X6 adopts a fresh exterior design, more standard equipment and a revised engine range, as BMW aims to build on the controversial success of the original coupe-styled SUV.

2015 BMW X6 Unveiled: Key Details and Features

Exterior Design and Aerodynamics

The 2015 X6 shares its platform and much of its interior architecture with the latest X5, but BMW has differentiated the X6 with a more aggressive and aerodynamic body. The sloping roofline and muscular stance remain key styling elements, while aerodynamic tweaks are intended to improve efficiency. Standard equipment now includes bi-xenon headlights, an automatic tailgate and 19-inch alloy wheels, enhancing both appearance and practicality.

Engine Line-up and Performance

BMW will offer the new X6 with three engines from launch. The xDrive50i uses a 4.4-litre TwinPower Turbo V8 producing 450hp and 650Nm of torque, delivering strong performance for those seeking power. The xDrive30d features a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel with 258hp and 560Nm, aimed at buyers prioritising efficiency and torque. At the top of the range, the M50d packs a tri-turbo 3.0-litre diesel delivering 381hp and 740Nm, combining high output with diesel economy. All models use BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system and an eight-speed automatic gearbox, ensuring traction and smooth shifting across the range.

M Sport Package and Suspension Upgrades

An M Sport package is available for buyers seeking a more dynamic look and feel. This package brings a more aggressive body kit, 19-inch lightweight alloy wheels, a matte aluminium grille, Adaptive M suspension and self-levelling rear air suspension. These enhancements are designed to set the M Sport variant apart, both visually and in terms of ride and handling.

Interior Design and Features

Inside, the X6 now features Dakota leather upholstery, a 10.25-inch iDrive display, a sport steering wheel and dual-zone climate control as standard. The cabin design is closely related to that of the new X5, with a focus on comfort and technology. Trim options include Poplar Grain, Fineline Pure, Brushed Aluminium, American Oak, Fineline Stripe and Oxide Silver, allowing buyers to personalise the interior. Knee pads on the centre console add to driver comfort, and the rear seats fold to reveal a maximum boot capacity of 1,525 litres, making the X6 practical for larger loads.

Future Variants and Model Range Expansion

BMW has confirmed that additional variants, including the sDrive35i, xDrive35i and xDrive40d, will join the X6 line-up after launch. These future additions are expected to broaden the appeal of the X6, offering buyers more choice in terms of powertrains and drivetrain configurations.

Market Context and Launch Timeline

The new model’s arrival follows the recent launch of the latest X5 and continues BMW’s expansion of its SUV range. The X6’s unveiling comes as rivals such as the Audi Q3 and the new Ford Expedition also update their SUV offerings, reflecting the growing competition in the premium SUV segment. BMW will show the new X6 to the public at the Moscow Motor Show before sales begin later in 2014. For buyers seeking even more power and performance, the X6 M and X5 M have also been announced separately, with further details available in dedicated coverage.
