BMW unveils second-generation X6 ahead of Moscow debut
BMW has revealed the redesigned 2015 X6, featuring updated styling, improved aerodynamics and a choice of new engines, ahead of its public debut at the 2014 Moscow Motor Show.
BMW has officially unveiled the second-generation X6, releasing full images and details ahead of the car’s first public appearance at the 2014 Moscow Motor Show. The new X6 follows the introduction of the latest X5 and continues BMW’s push to expand its SUV range with models that combine performance and coupe-inspired design.
The 2015 X6 adopts a more sculpted exterior, with sharper lines and a bolder front end. The roofline remains steeply raked, preserving the coupé-SUV silhouette that defined the original. BMW has worked on the aerodynamics, with details such as air curtains and active grille shutters aimed at reducing drag and improving efficiency.
Under the skin, the new X6 shares its platform and much of its technology with the latest X5. Engine options include a range of turbocharged six-cylinder and V8 petrol units, as well as diesel variants for European markets. BMW says the new engines deliver more power and lower fuel consumption than those in the outgoing model. An eight-speed automatic gearbox is standard across the range, and all-wheel drive remains the default for most versions.
Design and technology updates
The interior of the 2015 X6 features updated materials and a revised dashboard layout, echoing the changes seen in the X5. Standard equipment includes a 10.2-inch central display, navigation, and BMW’s latest iDrive controller. Higher-spec models offer options such as leather upholstery, head-up display and advanced driver assistance systems.
Position in BMW’s SUV range
With the new X6, BMW is building on the success of its original coupé-SUV formula. The model sits above the X5 in terms of price and positioning, targeting buyers seeking a more distinctive and sporty alternative to conventional large SUVs. The X6 competes directly with rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz ML Coupe, which has also been spotted in development.

Engine choices and performance
BMW’s engine line-up for the 2015 X6 includes both petrol and diesel options, with outputs ranging from a turbocharged six-cylinder to a twin-turbocharged V8. The most powerful variant, the X6 xDrive50i, uses a 4.4-litre V8 developing over 440bhp. Diesel engines are expected to be the mainstay in Europe, offering strong torque and improved efficiency. All models feature BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system as standard or optional, depending on market.
Market launch and production
Production of the new X6 will take place at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in the United States, alongside the X5. Deliveries for European markets are scheduled to begin before the end of 2014, with other regions to follow. Pricing and detailed specifications for the UK and other markets will be announced closer to launch.
