Mercedes-Benz IAA Concept Unveiled at 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show
Mercedes-Benz presented the Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile (IAA) Concept in Frankfurt, showcasing active aerodynamics, a plug-in hybrid drivetrain and a claimed drag coefficient of 0.19.
Mercedes-Benz revealed its Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile (IAA) Concept at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, positioning it as a technical and design showcase for the brand’s future luxury models. The IAA Concept combines active aerodynamics with plug-in hybrid technology and previews elements likely to appear in upcoming production cars such as the next CLS and S-Class.
Aerodynamics and design
The IAA Concept’s most striking feature is its active aerodynamic bodywork. At speeds above 80km/h, the car automatically extends various panels at the front and rear, increasing its overall length by up to 390mm. This active system reduces drag to a claimed 0.19, a figure that would put it among the most aerodynamically efficient cars ever shown. The design language, with a long, flowing silhouette and minimal surface interruptions, signals the direction Mercedes-Benz intends for its next generation of luxury vehicles.
Inside, the IAA Concept features four individual seats and a dashboard layout reminiscent of current Mercedes-Benz models, including four round central air vents and a large central display. Additional screens provide climate and engine data, while gesture control pads offer a preview of future in-car technology.
Hybrid powertrain and emissions
Under the bonnet, the IAA Concept uses a plug-in hybrid system producing 274hp. Mercedes-Benz claims an electric-only range of 32km (20 miles) and a top speed of 250km/h. CO2 emissions are quoted at 28g/km, reflecting the concept’s focus on combining performance with efficiency. The hybrid setup is in line with the company’s strategy to expand electrified drivetrains across its luxury line-up.
A preview of future Mercedes-Benz models
Mercedes-Benz presented the IAA Concept as a statement of intent for its next generation of luxury cars. The active aerodynamics and plug-in hybrid system are expected to influence forthcoming production models. Elements of the IAA’s design and technology could appear in future versions of the CLS and S-Class, as Mercedes-Benz continues to develop its electrified and aerodynamic vehicle range.
