Next Mercedes-Benz GLK Spied Testing With Larger Body and C-Class Underpinnings
Spy images reveal the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLK with a longer wheelbase and sportier proportions, as Mercedes prepares to reposition its compact SUV above the new GLA.
Mercedes-Benz engineers have been caught testing the next-generation GLK, with spy images revealing a longer body and reworked proportions as the compact SUV prepares to replace the model launched in 2008. The new GLK is expected to reach showrooms in late 2014 or early 2015.
The prototype, heavily camouflaged, shows a clear increase in size over the outgoing GLK. The bonnet is visibly stretched and the front axle sits further forward, pointing to a longer wheelbase. This change is in line with Mercedes' plan to create more space between the GLK and the smaller GLA, which has recently been spied ahead of its debut (see 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLA spied ahead of Frankfurt debut). The extra length should translate into improved interior space, addressing one of the main criticisms of the current model when compared with rivals like the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.
Sportier stance and revised roofline
Beyond the increase in size, the next GLK appears to adopt a sportier stance. The roofline slopes more steeply towards the rear, and the overall proportions look less boxy than the outgoing model. These changes should give the SUV a more dynamic appearance in line with Mercedes' current design language, while also improving aerodynamics and rear passenger headroom.
C-Class platform and powertrains
Under the skin, the GLK is expected to share its platform and much of its mechanical hardware with the latest C-Class. This move should bring benefits in ride comfort, refinement and technology integration. The engine range is likely to start with a new four-cylinder turbocharged petrol, with a displacement around 1.8 litres, badged as the GLK 250. Diesel options are also expected, though details remain unconfirmed. There is no official word yet on whether an AMG performance variant will join the line-up.
Positioning and market timing
The current GLK has been on sale since autumn 2008, with a facelift arriving mid-cycle. The new model is timed to strengthen Mercedes' position in the premium compact SUV segment, where competition from Audi and BMW remains intense. The expected launch window is late 2014, though some sources suggest first deliveries may slip into 2015, depending on production schedules and market rollout.
The GLK's growth in size and adoption of C-Class architecture signals Mercedes' intention to make its compact SUV more competitive on space, comfort and technology, as it seeks to widen the gap to the GLA and better match its German rivals.
