Kia introduced the 2016 Optima at the 2015 New York Auto Show, confirming the new model will reach showrooms towards the end of the year. The saloon arrives with a reworked chassis that is both lighter and stiffer, achieved through increased use of high-strength steel. This update aims to improve both handling and occupant safety, while also helping efficiency.

2016 Kia Optima: Debut and Design Changes

The exterior design moves forward without abandoning the previous generation’s proportions. The new front end features larger air intakes and sweptback headlights, with HID units and High Beam Assist available. The overall look remains familiar but sharper, in line with Kia’s current design language. These changes give the Optima a more assertive road presence while maintaining the practicality expected of a family saloon.

Interior and Technology Upgrades

Inside, Kia has focused on material quality and comfort. Higher-grade soft-touch surfaces appear throughout, while the seats have been redesigned for greater support. Entry-level models come with a 6-speaker audio system and a new infotainment setup compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Top trims offer a 14-speaker premium sound system, leather or Nappa leather upholstery, and heated and ventilated front seats. These enhancements aim to make the Optima more appealing for drivers seeking a modern, comfortable cabin experience.

The infotainment system’s compatibility with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto reflects Kia’s efforts to integrate widely used technology, providing easier access to navigation, music, and communication apps. This is a significant step for the Optima, as more buyers expect seamless smartphone integration in new vehicles.

Safety Features and Equipment

Safety equipment has expanded. Available systems include Advanced Smart Cruise Control, an Around View Monitor, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Autonomous Emergency Braking. These features position the Optima competitively against other volume saloons in the segment. The addition of these technologies is intended to provide extra reassurance for both drivers and passengers, and could help the Optima achieve strong safety ratings once tested.

Engine Range and Transmissions

Kia will offer three four-cylinder petrol engines for the 2016 Optima. The 2.4-litre naturally aspirated unit produces 185hp and 241Nm, while the 1.6-litre turbocharged engine delivers 178hp and 264Nm. The most powerful option is the 2.0-litre turbo with 247hp and 352Nm. Most engines pair with a six-speed automatic gearbox, but the 1.6 turbo comes exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. This variety gives buyers the option to choose between efficiency and performance, depending on their needs.

Trim Levels and Features

While detailed trim information has not been fully disclosed, Kia has confirmed that higher-spec versions of the Optima will include luxury features such as Nappa leather upholstery, a 14-speaker sound system, and advanced seat heating and ventilation. These additions are designed to help the Optima compete with rivals in the increasingly upmarket family saloon segment.

Pricing and Availability

Kia has not yet announced pricing for the 2016 Optima. The car is expected to arrive in dealerships towards the end of 2015. Pricing details, as well as full trim specifications, are likely to be released closer to the on-sale date.
