Jaguar has given the XF saloon a public debut at the 2015 New York Auto Show, revealing a new generation that is 190 kg lighter than its predecessor and underpinned by a structure made from 75 percent aluminium. The car’s wheelbase has grown by 51 mm, while overall length is down by 7 mm, a move aimed at improving interior space and handling without increasing the XF’s footprint.

Jaguar claims a near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution for the new XF, which should benefit handling and ride. The use of aluminium is central to the weight saving, and the company says this also helps efficiency and performance. The XF’s main rivals remain the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class and Audi A6.

Engines and transmissions for 2016

The UK engine line-up includes two versions of the 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel: one with 163 hp and 380 Nm of torque, and another with 180 hp and 430 Nm. Both can be paired with a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Higher up the range, buyers get a choice of a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel producing 300 hp and 700 Nm, and a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol with 380 hp and 450 Nm. These V6s are matched to the eight-speed automatic as standard.

Interior tech and cabin updates

Inside, the XF gains a 12.3-inch TFT digital instrument cluster that can be reconfigured by the driver, alongside a 10.2-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. Jaguar fits the car with a quad-core processor to power the system and offers an optional 17-speaker, 825-watt Meridian sound system. The stretched wheelbase is designed to improve rear legroom, addressing a common criticism of the outgoing XF.

Market context and rivals

The XF’s reveal in New York puts it up against fresh competition from German and Japanese saloons also debuting at the show. For more on the 2016 saloon launches in New York, seeour coverage of the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander facelift.
