Subaru pulled the covers off its STI Performance Concept at the 2015 New York Auto Show, offering a glimpse of what a motorsport-honed BRZ could look like for the road. The concept, developed by Subaru Tecnica International (STI), features a wide-body kit, aggressive aerodynamics and hardware lifted from the brand’s GT300 race car.

Race-bred engineering for the road

The STI Performance Concept is built around the BRZ platform but stands out with pronounced wheel arches, deeper side skirts and a rear wing that signals its motorsport intent. Cooling ducts and vents are integrated throughout the bodywork, reflecting the demands of high-performance use. The concept’s chassis, suspension and braking systems also take direct inspiration from the BRZ GT300 that competes in Japan’s Super GT series.

Under the bonnet sits a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine, the same unit used in the GT300 race car. Subaru did not confirm output figures for the concept, but the GT300’s engine is rated at around 300bhp and 447Nm of torque. This marks a clear departure from the naturally aspirated flat-four found in the standard BRZ, which produces 200bhp. The turbocharged engine, paired with the upgraded chassis, points to a substantial performance boost over the road car.

No production commitment yet

Subaru has not confirmed any production plans for the STI Performance Concept. The car serves as a showcase for STI’s engineering capabilities and hints at a possible future for a more extreme BRZ. For now, it remains a concept, but the strong reaction at New York suggests there is appetite for a turbocharged, racing-inspired BRZ variant. Subaru has previously explored similar ideas, as seen with the BRZ STI concepts shown at other international shows.
