The 2015 Subaru WRX STI has set a remarkable new lap record at the Isle of Man TT Road Course, one of the world’s most demanding circuits. British rally driver Mark Higgins piloted the new-generation WRX STI around the 37.73-mile (60.72 km) closed-road course in just 19 minutes and 26 seconds, averaging a speed of 116.47 mph (187.44 km/h). This achievement highlights the capabilities of Subaru’s flagship performance saloon and marks a significant improvement over previous records.

2015 Subaru WRX STI Breaks Lap Record at Isle of Man TT

Background: The Isle of Man TT Course

The Isle of Man TT Road Course is internationally renowned for its annual motorcycle races, where riders tackle a challenging mix of high-speed straights, tight village sections, and technical mountain roads. The circuit, made up of public roads closed for racing, is notorious for its narrow lanes, unpredictable surfaces, and minimal run-off areas. This makes it a formidable challenge not only for motorcycles but also for cars attempting record runs. Subaru has a history of sending its WRX STI models to the Isle of Man to demonstrate their performance and durability under the most demanding conditions.

Details of the Record-Breaking Run

Mark Higgins, a Manx native and experienced rally driver, was behind the wheel for the record attempt in June 2014. Higgins had previously set the lap record in 2011, also driving a Subaru WRX STI, with a time of 19 minutes and 56.7 seconds. The new 2015 WRX STI shaved more than 30 seconds off that time, demonstrating tangible improvements in handling and speed. Subaru prepared the car with minimal modifications, focusing on safety enhancements such as a roll cage and racing harnesses. The mechanical components, including the engine, transmission, and all-wheel drive system, remained as they are in the production model.

Technical Specifications of the 2015 Subaru WRX STI

The WRX STI’s 2.5-litre turbocharged boxer engine delivers 306 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 393 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. Power is sent through a six-speed manual gearbox to Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive system, a combination known for providing excellent traction and stability. The car’s top speed is rated at 164 mph (264 km/h), and during the record run, Higgins was able to approach these limits on the course’s long straights.

Chassis Improvements and Driving Experience

A key factor in the record was the improved chassis and suspension of the 2015 WRX STI. Higgins was able to carry more speed through the technical sections of the circuit, crediting the car’s stability and grip. The challenging nature of the Isle of Man TT course, with its combination of high-speed runs through villages, sharp bends in the mountains, and bumpy surfaces, puts a premium on chassis balance and driver confidence. The 2015 model’s upgrades over its predecessor allowed Higgins to maintain higher speeds and reduce lap times across each sector.

The table above shows the progression of Subaru’s lap records at the Isle of Man TT course. While the engine output between the 2010 and 2015 models remained similar, the newer car’s advancements in chassis dynamics and suspension tuning resulted in a substantial improvement in lap time and average speed.

Significance for Subaru and Performance Saloons

The 2015 Subaru WRX STI’s performance at the Isle of Man TT Road Course stands out as a demonstration of what a production-based saloon can achieve under extreme conditions. Subaru’s focus on balanced handling, reliable power, and all-wheel drive capability has made the WRX STI a favourite among driving enthusiasts. The record run not only showcases the car’s technical strengths but also reinforces Subaru’s reputation for building robust, high-performance vehicles capable of excelling in challenging environments.
